Treatments

Crowns and veneers have been used in dentistry for many years to repair damaged teeth or improve their shape or colour. Bridges have been used to replace missing teeth.

The best success rates have been achieved by conventional methods involving tooth preparation using crowns or conventional bridges which join crowns to replacement teeth or pontics. An internal audit of the Eastman Prosthodontic Department’s own work carried out by postgraduates has shown median survival times (average) of 20-25 years.

In the last 30 years, adhesive cements have allowed good success with veneers and resin-bonded bridges of 10 and 8 years respectively. These techniques involve very little tooth preparation which bring along considerable biological and financial savings. These success rates are significantly higher than those experienced by patients receiving routine care in NHS general dental services.

Treatment planning is comprehensive to ensure that the patient receives appropriate management. All restorative (operative or prosthodontic) procedures used in providing these restorations are time consuming and exacting. Expensive failures should be expected in a short period of time unless high standards are maintained.

Complex problems may need the expertise of other dental consultants or specialists as part of multi-disciplinary care. Liaison is commonly needed with Orthodontists, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Endodontists as well as other medical or surgical colleagues.
